A gallery of snapshots from the USS Rall
The officer in the top row is Richard Graves. His comments after over fifty years have passed: "Those men look like little boys. I am once again reminded of the youth of our men. Yet they stood up valiantly under enemy fire. The man on my left, Tony Njirich, was later killed, not ten feet from where I stood." | |

Most DEs and
all destroyers had far greater firepower than did the Rall, yet
many were sunk or more heavily damaged.
Credit goes to our excellent training and relentless drills, combined with the courage and skill of our gun crews. Our ship withstood a well-coordinated attack. One plane, shown here, was successful because of ordnance failure. An unexploded 1.1" shell was found embedded in the plane's engine. |
